The Treue der Union Monument stands as a solemn limestone obelisk marking a mass grave of German-Texan Unionists killed during the Civil War.

Dedicated in 1866, the Treue der Union Monument is the oldest Civil War memorial in Texas and the state's only Union monument. It honors 36 German-Texan men and boys who were killed by Confederate forces in 1862 at the Battle of the Nueces and later at the Rio Grande while attempting to flee to Mexico to avoid fighting for the Confederacy. The limestone obelisk marks a mass grave where the remains of the victims were interred by survivors in 1865. The monument serves as a symbol of the loyalty and courage of German immigrants who opposed secession and slavery.
