About Boerne

Boerne, Texas — Main Street, Antiques & German Heritage

Boerne (say it BURN-ee) is the county seat of Kendall County, about 30 miles northwest of San Antonio on I-10 — close enough for a day trip from the city, far enough that it still feels like somewhere. It was founded in 1849 by German immigrants and freethinkers and named for Ludwig Börne, a German political writer. The heritage is real: limestone architecture, German family names, and a culture of craftsmanship that still shows up on the street. People come for the shopping, the food, the breweries, and what may be the best antique corridor in the Hill Country. What they don't expect is how much there is to do.

About Us

Built by a locally operated Hill Country travel company.

boerne.ai is built by Spencer and Jess Forrest, owners of Backroads Hill Country — a locally operated Texas Hill Country travel company that has represented Hill Country vacation rentals since 2001, with thousands of guest stays coordinated across the region.

Most travel platforms flatten a place like Boerne into generic top-10 lists. This is built the other way around — local knowledge first, from people who actually live and work in the Hill Country.

Local Knowledge

Frequently asked about Boerne

BURN-ee. Two syllables. It's named for Ludwig Börne, a German political writer the founding settlers admired. Say it wrong and a local will gently correct you.
Start on South Main Street — park near the Dienger Trading Co. and walk south through the shops and antique dealers. Have breakfast at Bear Moon Bakery (get there before 9 on weekends). In the afternoon, drive 10 minutes out to Cave Without a Name on Kreutzberg Road, or walk the free trails at the Cibolo Nature Center. End the day on the patio at the Dodging Duck Brewhaus, right on Cibolo Creek.
Very. It's arguably the best antique corridor in the Hill Country — better than Fredericksburg for furniture and vintage housewares. The strongest stretch runs along South Main Street: Carousel Antiques, Corner Cartel, Laurie Saunders, Two Trick Pony, Mainly Vintage. For one big space under one roof, the Johns Road Antique Mall is the largest single dealer in town. Give yourself two hours if you're serious.
Depends on the meal. Breakfast: Bear Moon Bakery or Mary's Tacos. Lunch: Richter Tavern or the Dienger Trading Co. Dinner: Botero Tapas & Wine Bar for something a little nicer, Richter Tavern for something reliable. If you'll drive 12 miles north, Po Po Family Restaurant in Welfare has been open since 1929.
Five within walking distance of each other, more or less. The Dodging Duck Brewhaus on River Road has the best patio in town, right on the creek. Also Free Roam Brewing, Tusculum Brewing, and Cibolo Creek Brewing along the Main corridor, plus Richter Cork & Keg for wine. Easy to do on foot.
Cave Without a Name is the best option — the tour is just long enough to hold their attention, and it's a constant 66°F inside. Boerne City Park has good playgrounds and creek access, and the Cibolo Nature Center has easy trails and lots of wildlife. For a half-day adventure, Enchanted Rock is about 45 minutes west.
Honestly, no — the Cibolo Creek is beautiful but not deep enough for tubing. For real river swimming you'll want to drive: the Guadalupe near Kerrville is about 45 minutes, and the Frio at Concan is about 90 minutes. Cibolo Creek is for walking the trails and admiring it, not floating it.
Backroads Hill Country manages vacation rentals in the Boerne area — including Boerne Mountain Retreat and a property on the Guadalupe River. Use the lodging page on this site to see what's open for your dates, or just ask me and I'll point you to the right fit.
Spring and fall are ideal — mild weather for walking Main Street and the trails. The town gets busy on weekends year-round and around the holidays, when the Christmas lighting and Main Street décor draw crowds. Weekday mornings are the quietest time to have the antique shops mostly to yourself.
Boerne is a fast-growing town and businesses open and close faster than anyone can keep up with — if you've got your heart set on a specific spot, call ahead before you make the drive. Most of what you'll want is walkable on and around South Main Street, so park once and explore on foot.
